The Girl Next Door

I think of her when the lights cut out.

Of the moment our hands first met, fumbling, on the fuse box in the hall. She squeaked, like I imagine she would sound when she comes, slow, and shy, and shocked and then all at once. I don’t remember what she said exactly. Something any college student might say: stupid electric companies skimping on safety to please their shareholders. The same half-hearted, ill-informed brand of socialism most of us subscribed to at one point or another.

It was sweet, I remember that. And she apologized more than once. For cursing, for her hand on my arm, her naked foot on my stockings. The fuse was fine, there was nothing for us to do; and we stood in the dark until our eyes adjusted. I remembered her then, the girl who moved into the apartment across the hall a few weeks earlier. The severe page cut that had seemed like such a blatant attempt to make her sweet, elfin features look more grown up. Sunflowers and fairy lights had appeared in the window, and a few evenings a week, the hallway smelled like Thai food. Lemons, and spice and coriander. Her name is Sarah, Sarah Harris. The almost anagram.

We found our way out of the basement by feel. Her fingers landed on my arm, on my shoulder, in my hair. They lingered there, and I pinned her against the wall, felt her hot breath on my neck.

The lights came back on, then, and she slipped away, red-faced and muttering an apology. And I didn’t see her again. Once or twice, I’m sure her door closed quickly, though, as I came up the stairs. I figured she just wasn’t into women.
